Bluetooth smart glasses (audio glasses) are having a moment. Here's what they actually do and whether they're worth it.
What Are Smart Glasses?
Glasses with built-in bone-conduction speakers, microphones, and Bluetooth connectivity. They look like regular glasses but provide:
- Phone calls via glasses
- Music playback
- Voice assistant access
- Some have cameras (privacy concerns)
What They Do Well
- Hands-free phone calls (great while driving)
- Music without earbuds
- Open-ear audio (stay aware of surroundings)
- Decent sound quality for casual listening
- UV protection (if prescription-ready)
What They Can't Do
- True noise cancellation
- Studio-quality sound
- Take high-quality photos (most cameras are low-res)
- Replace dedicated earbuds for music lovers
Who Should Buy Them?
- People who take lots of phone calls hands-free
- Frequent travelers (no earbuds needed)
- Outdoor walkers (audio + awareness)
- People with hearing aids (alternative audio option)
- Anyone wanting tech aesthetic without earbuds
Who Should Skip
- Music enthusiasts (earbuds sound better)
- Privacy-conscious users (cameras = concerns)
- Heavy glasses wearers (may interfere with prescriptions)
Concerns
- Privacy (microphones on glasses)
- Social acceptance (some find them weird)
- Battery life (typically 4-8 hours)
- Price ($50-300)
Price Range
- Budget: $50-100 (mostly generic brands)
- Premium: $150-300 (Bose, Razer, Echo Frames)
Features to Look For
- Good speaker quality (bone conduction works well)
- Decent mic quality for calls
- 5+ hour battery life
- Lightweight design
- UV protection
- Polarized lenses option
The Bottom Line
Smart glasses are a niche product. Great for specific use cases (calls, walking, travel). Not worth it for music enthusiasts or anyone who already likes earbuds.
The bluetooth audio glasses at TopShopTrends offer a budget entry into the category.
